Campsite chronicles: Micro-predators and stilt legs in the Swedish woods

Meet Neria cibaria, a peculiar insect belonging to the stilt-legged fly family (Micropezidae). Commonly found near streams and damp woodlands across Europe, these flies sport extraordinarily long legs that lift their bodies high above the forest floor—a clever adaptation that helps them stay cool in hot, humid microclimates. To deter predators, they frequently perform a specialized leg-waving dance that convincingly mimics the movements of a stinging wasp or an alert ant. Despite their gangly posture, adults measure a modest 7 to 8 millimeters and are fierce, active predators. They hunt down tiny, soft-bodied insects like aphids and supplement their diet with sweet honeydew, while their subterranean larvae act as vital decomposers, feeding on decaying fungi and rotting plant matter. I crossed paths with this leggy anomaly at a Swedish campsite, catching it red-handed as it devoured a small flying insect on the foliage.
