Meet Mordella, a genus of small, dynamic insects commonly known as tumbling flower beetles. Distributed across every continent except Antarctica, these humpbacked beetles are instantly recognizable by their wedge-like profiles, pointed abdomens, and wildly eccentric escape tactics. When threatened, they engage their enlarged hind thighs to forcefully kick off whatever surface they are standing on. This launches them into a chaotic, somersaulting frenzy through the air—an erratic, unpredictable defense designed to completely baffle hungry predators. While the adults spend their days fueling up on nectar and pollen, their larvae reside in rotting wood or hollow stems, quietly processing forest debris. I crossed paths with this medium-sized specimen on a leaf during a quick rest break during the final phase of my monthly bicycle tour through Sweden and Finland. Despite their reputation for chaotic acrobatics, this particular beetle didn’t perform a single flip. Instead, it remained completely frozen in place the entire time—presumably hoping that if it didn’t move a muscle, the massive human leaning over it with a camera lens wouldn’t notice!
