A patient model in the canopy: Meeting a Lauxaniid fly

Sapromyzosoma is a subgenus of small flies within the family Lauxaniidae, whose larvae typically feed on decaying plant material in forest litter. Originally classified within the broad genus Sapromyza, Sapromyzosoma was established as a subgenus (and is sometimes treated as a distinct genus) by Italian entomologist Vittore Lioy in 1864. Mature larvae of species like Sapromyzosoma quadricincta are unusually soft and dorsoventrally flattened, allowing them to maneuver easily through tight crevices in leaf litter. First-instar larvae possess a dense array of over 60 scraping cirri arranged in specialized rows to feed on microscopic organic layers, while their tiny eggs feature a distinct micropylar pole equipped with a star-like collar and specialized aeropyles for respiration. I encountered this tiny fly resting on leaves, patiently posing for an extended photography session in a small woodland just a few blocks from my home in Barkarby, Sweden.
