Sleek, shiny, and lightning-fast, ground beetles (Carabidae) are iconic hunters of the insect world. However, the tribe Zabrini breaks the typical predator mold—specializing in a plant-based diet! Rather than chasing down worms or bugs, these clever beetles are granivores, feasting primarily on fallen seeds from wild grasses, mustards, and daisies. By hoovering up weed seeds from the soil surface, these beetles act as valuable, eco-friendly helpers for farmers and gardeners. While many ground beetles only venture out under the cover of night, some of the seed-eating species love the bright, sunny daytime, zipping across the ground throughout northern Europe, Asia, and North America. Ever since I started studying insects, ground beetles have been among my absolute favorites due to their elegant bodies and incredible speed. But because they are constantly on the move, taking a sharp photo in the wild is nearly impossible! This time I got lucky—this handsome individual was resting peacefully on a grass blade. Maybe a vegetarian lifestyle makes for a slightly less hectic runner?
