Scent sniffers and crop wanders: The alfalfa plant bug

Slender, swift, and equipped with incredible chemical senses, the alfalfa plant bug (Adelphocoris lineolatus) is a master at navigating grassy fields. Measuring about a centimeter long, this light green or straw-yellow plant bug features a pair of dark dots on its upper back and two distinct dark stripes running down its central back shield. Unlike many of its close relatives, this insect specializes in legumes—especially alfalfa and red clover. Using powerful, sensitive antennae that act like chemical super-sniffers, it tracks subtle scents given off by blooming crops over impressive distances. Once it arrives, it uses a sharp, straw-like beak to sip juices from delicate flower buds and shoots. Because these active wanderers spread rapidly across agricultural areas and can build up resistance to traditional treatments, scientists are now testing clever scent traps that confuse their mating calls to protect crops. I met this handsome insect while exploring a lush Swedish meadow. It did not want to collaborate, ducking behind stems as soon as I drew near—but after maneuvering through the dense vegetation, I finally lucked out with two sharp shots!
