During the day, the checkered beetle (Trichodes apiarius) is a frequent visitor to sunlit blossoms, where it leads a double life: hunting small insects while simultaneously grazing on pollen. Behind its vibrant appearance, however, lies a more calculated survival strategy; females occasionally deposit their eggs inside beehives, where the beetle larvae feed on developing bees. Yet, despite this rather brutal lifecycle, it is impossible not to be captivated by the sheer elegance of this species—and indeed, the entire Cleridae family.
