During the day, the bee-eating beetle (Trichodes apiarius) is a frequent visitor to sunlit blossoms, where it leads a double life: hunting small insects while simultaneously grazing on pollen. Behind its vibrant appearance, however, lies a more calculated survival strategy; females occasionally deposit their eggs inside beehives, where the beetle larvae feed on developing bees. Yet, despite this rather brutal lifecycle, it is impossible not to be captivated by the sheer elegance of this species—and indeed, the entire Cleridae family. Most checkered beetles are adorned with intense, brilliant coloration and striking patterns, easily securing their place among the most visually dazzling insects you can encounter in the wild.
