Strong fliers and hidden scents: The leaf-footed bugs of Puyo

The lead-footed bugs (Coreidae) is a large and diverse family of true bugs distinguished by their thickened, often leaf-like, hind legs. These medium-to-large insects feed primarily on plant fluids, often causing delicate foliage and vines to wilt under their heavy grazing. On the wing, they are surprisingly strong, loud fliers, generating a deep, resonant tone that alerts anyone nearby to their presence. However, their primary defense is chemical: when threatened or disturbed, both adults and nymphs can emit a pungent, foul-smelling liquid from specialized defensive scent glands located on the sides of their thorax. I encountered this handsome specimen resting quietly amidst the lush greenery of the city park in Puyo, Ecuador.
