Measuring just 5 to 6 millimeters long, this adaptable insect carries a charming detail on its back: a light-colored triangular badge on its shield that often resembles a tiny heart! Beneath its artistic pattern lies a voracious feeder that visits over 200 different plant species, from wild meadow herbs to strawberries and apples. Equipped with a straw-like mouthpart, it injects special plant-softening fluids to digest its meal before taking a sip. While young green nymphs can be mistaken for aphids, adults use their tarnished, leaf-like colors to blend seamlessly into autumn debris. When winter arrives, adults snuggle safely beneath fallen leaves and tree bark, waiting for the first warm rays of early spring to wake them up.
