Lema spp. are small, often metallic leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) celebrated for their striking coloration and bizarre larval survival mechanisms. While these beetles are found globally, the Neotropical species thrive in the humid, lush edges of tropical agricultural fields. To survive, their soft-bodied larvae construct a “fecal shield”—a specialized, slimy casing made of their own excrement carried directly on their backs. This portable, foul-tasting shield acts as a brilliant camouflage matrix to deter predatory ants and wasps, while simultaneously preventing their delicate bodies from drying out under the intense sun. I crossed paths with this tiny, glittering specimen while exploring a farm in La Concordia, situated within the vibrant Santo Domingo province of Ecuador.
