The masters of multitasking: Why soldier beetles love flowers on a date

Soldier beetles (family Cantharidae) are slender, soft-bodied insects closely related to fireflies, though they lack the specialized organs required to produce light. Instead of illuminating the night, they shine during the day, using vibrant flowers as the ultimate venue to eat and find dates. In fact, it is incredibly common to observe these beetles multitasking—happily feeding on pollen and nectar while mating simultaneously! This particular soldier beetle, likely belonging to the genus Chauliognathus, utilizes flowers for pollen but remains an active hunter of soft-bodied pests like aphids and caterpillars. Their velvety, soil-dwelling larvae are equally voracious, subterranean predators that actively prey on grasshopper eggs and small caterpillars. I encountered this stunning, multitasking beetle in the protected forest of “La Perla”—a precious reminder of the vast rainforests that covered the entire coast of Ecuador in ancient times.
