Insects in the family Tettigoniidae are commonly called katydids or bush crickets. They have previously been known as “long-horned grasshoppers”. More than 8,000 species are known. They are usually small-to-medium sized, agile and often active at night during summer and early fall. They are famous for their long filamentous antennae, which may exceed their own body length. This ketydid, likely belonging to the genus Ceraia, was my first insect spotted during my first trip to the Yasuni National Park in the Amazon region of Ecuador. I was surprised to see how short his abdomen was, which can be explained by its early developmental stage. Katydids undergo a process called incomplete metamorphosis, where the nymph looks like a small version of the adult, but without wings.
