The smaller long-headed locust (Atractomorpha lata) is a distinct species of grasshopper found throughout Eastern Asia. Their coloration depends on the climate in which they develop; warm, humid temperatures produce green coloring to hide in lush vegetation, while cooler temperatures trigger the growth of brown morphs to match drying winter foliage. Females are typically twice the size of males, which often ride on the backs of females even when they are not actively mating. This behavior protects the female from other suitors. When I visited an Okinawa public park in December 2025, there were hundreds of these locusts. However, it took me some time to take photos because they would jump away at the slightest movement.
