Time for a rotten fruit snack: The satyr butterflies of Puyo

The Valentina satyr (Pseudodebis valentina) is a Neotropical butterfly from the brush-footed butterflies family (Nymphalidae). Its dietary habits set the satyr tribe completely apart from typical nectar-loving butterflies. While their camouflaged caterpillars feed on grasses, adult satyrs rarely visit flowers. Instead, they feast on fermenting juices from rotten fruit, tree sap, and animal droppings near the dim forest floor. To survive in the shadows, these butterflies sport bold, target-like “eyespots” on the underside of their wings. These striking circles act as a clever defense mechanism: when a hungry bird strikes, it aims for the harmless wing edges rather than the butterfly’s vulnerable body. I crossed paths with this intriguing butterfly while exploring the city park in Puyo, a gateway town nestled against the vast Ecuadorian Amazon.
