Meet Stenopogon spp., a massive 3 cm robber fly (family Asilidae) native to the Mediterranean and southern Europe. These guys are elite aerial assassins, specialized in ambushing other insects right out of the air. Thanks to a highly mobile head nestled deep between two massive compound eyes, they can track prey in almost every direction simultaneously. When they strike, they dive-bomb their targets and lock them inside a basket formed by their powerful, bristly legs. Even if the prey is larger than the fly itself, a dose of instantaneous, lethal venom cuts the struggle short. They then wait for injected digestive enzymes to liquefy the insides. During my visit to the Botanical Garden of Athens in June 2025, these flies were everywhere—hovering like small, menacing helicopters and scoping out territory from the bushes. Getting close was a real challenge. I could only snap a few shots from a distance, missing out on some macro details like the mystax. This thick mustache of bristles on their face acts as biological armor, protecting their eyes and antennae from a victim’s desperate, final struggles.
