Ladies’ nights in the insect world: The reversed roles of Rhamphomyia

Meet the dagger flies (family Empididae) of the genus Rhamphomyia—a group of insects famous for a dating scene that turns traditional evolutionary rules entirely on their head. In a fascinating “sex-role-reversed” mating ritual, it is the females who gather in large, competitive swarms to display themselves, while the males cruise by to shop around. To stand out, females are often larger, darker, and decorated with elaborate, feather-like leg scales. But a male doesn’t dare show up empty-handed. First, he hunts down a small insect, wraps it carefully in silk, and presents this “nuptial gift” to his chosen partner. Scientists believe this elegant present is actually a crucial distraction: it keeps the female’s attention busy so the male can mate without becoming her next meal! True to their family name (which stems from a Greek word meaning “gnat” or “mosquito,” though commonly called dagger flies), they are voracious predators equipped with a long, needle-sharp proboscis used to impale other bugs mid-air or sip nectar. I photographed this dapper male taking a quiet breather on some foliage in a farmhouse garden in Sweden.
