High-pressure hydraulics and theatrical dances: The world of the zebra jumping spider

Meet the common zebra spider (Salticus scenicus), a tiny, hyperactive jumping spider easily recognized by its bold black-and-white stripes. Found throughout the Northern Hemisphere and measuring a modest 4 to 9 millimeters, this completely harmless hunter is a brilliant natural pest controller, routinely tackling prey much larger than itself. Remarkably, they lack extensor muscles in their legs; instead, they leap by explosively pumping blood into them, launching themselves up to 14 times their own body length. They rely on superb vision rather than webs to hunt, tracking prey with two massive, swiveling forward-facing eyes, while six smaller eyes provide a near-360-degree field of view. Their scientific name appropriately translates to “theatrical dancer”—a nod to the elaborate, jerky courtship dance males perform by waving their legs and pedipalps while bobbing their abdomens. Spotting a tiny spec moving down a tree trunk in the bright sun of Northern Sweden, it took me over 15 minutes of intense focus to capture a few sharp shots. It was worth every ounce of effort, as this pint-sized predator is truly stunning under a macro lens.
