Wasp stripes and zigzag webs: Meeting the striking wasp spider

Dressed in brilliant yellow, white, and midnight-black stripes, the wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi) is one of the most eye-catching orb-weavers in the meadow world. Reaching up to two centimeters long—while her tiny male suitors measure just a few millimeters—this harmless female relies on a clever bluff: wearing bold, wasp-like warnings to fool hungry birds into looking elsewhere for lunch! Suspended low in tall grass, her orb web features a signature vertical zigzag ribbon of bright white silk. This unusual pattern reflects ultraviolet light, acting as a glowing beacon that draws in unsuspecting grasshoppers and crickets. Beyond her remarkable hunting skills, her lifecycle ends with a final masterpiece: weaving a tough, urn-shaped silk cocoon to protect hundreds of eggs through the freezing winter before dying off in autumn. I came across this magnificent female on a sunlit meadow near Akalla, Sweden. She was hard at work, expertly wrapping up a fresh catch almost as large as herself right in the center of her web!
