Nature’s crimson warning: Tracking the bloody net-Winged beetle in Scandinavia

Meet the bloody net-winged beetle (Lygistopterus sanguineus), a striking, crimson insect belonging to the family Lycidae. Widely distributed across Europe and parts of Asia, this woodland specialist is a master of visual warning; its brilliant, fiery-red coloration serves as an unmistakable warning sign (aposematism) to birds and other predators that it is highly toxic and completely unpalatable. While its larvae are fierce predators that hunt small invertebrates deep within decaying wood, the adults undergo a total dietary shift upon maturity, transitioning to a peaceful diet of sweet plant sap and nectar. Heavily associated with moist, broadleaf forests, these beetles are often seen crawling unhurriedly over foliage or resting quietly on wildflowers near rotting oak and beech logs. During my long-distance bicycle tour along the Baltic Sea coast, this vibrant insect proved impossible to miss, treating me to several beautiful encounters across the forested landscapes of both Sweden and Finland.
