Hidden in plain sight: Learning to spot a slender enigma

Meet Morinia doronici, a slender black fly belonging to the cluster flies family (Polleniidae). While most of its cousins are known for their stout, robust build, this particular species stands out with its remarkably slim, narrow body. But the real surprise lies in its lineage: while the larvae of most related cluster flies are parasites of earthworms, the genus Morinia is famous for its bizarre adaptability. Some species within the genus have evolved to live directly inside the fluid-filled pitchers of carnivorous plants, scavenging on the dead insects trapped within. The adults are common across the Palearctic region, frequently patrolling parks, gardens, and deciduous forest edges to feed on nectar and plant sap. Despite their wide distribution, the exact early life cycle and host preferences for M. doronici remain a mystery to science. It may look unassuming to the naked eye, but capturing it under a macro lens forced me to look closer. Learning to isolate its unique characteristics from a sea of lookalike flies was incredibly rewarding, and I walked away with some nice, detailed frames.
