Linnaeus’s glass jewel: Photographing a translucent dwarf spider in Sweden

Meet the orange-legged spider (Gongylidium rufipes), a miniature marvel belonging to the family Linyphiidae—commonly known as dwarf spiders or sheet weavers. First described by the legendary Carl Linnaeus in 1758, this resilient species is well established in the Swedish wilderness. They are incredibly diminutive; males reach a mere 2.5 to 3 mm, while females are only slightly larger. Thriving in the high humidity of wetlands and damp forest floors, they spin flat, sheet-like silk traps to catch passing micro-insects. I crossed paths with a spectacular pregnant female resting at a Swedish campsite. Her defining feature—a pair of vibrant, contrasting reddish-orange legs against a shiny, dark body—was entirely upstaged by a massively swollen, translucent-looking abdomen. Magnifying a creature this microscopic through the lens was a true exercise in precision, but I managed to secure some genuinely striking high-magnification portraits of this tiny, glass-like hunter.
