Post-glacial emeralds: Lestes sponsa in the natural reserve of Järfälla

The emerald damselfly (Lestes sponsa), also known as the common spreadwing, is a captivating insect with a signature posture: unlike most damselflies that fold their wings flat along their backs, it rests with its wings outstretched at a characteristic 45-degree angle. Both sexes sport a brilliant metallic green body, though mature males acquire a striking pruinose—or powdery blue—coating on their eyes, thorax, and the tips of their abdomen. Females exhibit extraordinary egg-laying behavior, submerging completely underwater—sometimes still clasped in tandem by the male—for up to 30 minutes to slice into submerged plant stems. The eggs overwinter in diapause before hatching in spring into a legless, limb-free larval stage that wriggles and hops across the ground until reaching the safety of the water. I encountered this emerald beauty on several occasions exploring the forests and meadows surrounding a stunning post-glacial lake reserve in Järfälla, Sweden.
