Echoes on the meadow: A chance encounter with Yponomeuta sedella

The grey ermine (Yponomeuta sedella), also known as the orpine ermine, is a delicate micro-moth with a wingspan of roughly 16 mm. Unlike its mostly white, black-spotted cousins in the ermine family, this species features smooth grey forewings and lacks black dots near the wing tips. Its larvae feed sociably in groups, spinning protective silk webs directly among the leaves of their primary host plant, orpine (Sedum telephium), and other garden stonecrops. When the time comes to transform, the caterpillars abandon their feeding webs to pupate elsewhere. Remarkably, I have encountered ermine moths only twice—both times in the exact same spot, precisely two years apart, in a lovely lakeside meadow within the Västra Järvafältet Nature Reserve in Järfälla, Sweden.
