Pleasing fungus beetles (family Erotylidae) are a diverse group of over 3,500 species of brightly colored, fungus-eating insects. While they are found worldwide, they display incredible diversity in the Neotropics. This particular beetle, belonging to the genus Aegithus, features striking, highly translucent—almost transparent—elytra (wing covers), through which its internal organs are actually visible. Both adults and larvae are mycophagous, meaning they feed on and decompose the bracket and shelf fungi growing on decaying wood. This was the very first insect I encountered during my initial visit to the “La Perla” protected forest in the Santo Domingo province in December 2023. This privately owned, preserved habitat represents one of the remaining parts of the ancient rainforest that once blanketed the entire coast of Ecuador.
