The red-veined darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii) is a highly nomadic dragonfly capable of traveling hundreds of miles. Native to southern Europe and Africa, these adventurous insects periodically stage massive migrations into northern Europe—even occasionally reaching as far north as Sweden. Males boast a bright red abdomen, red-brown faces, striking eyes that are brown on top and blue-grey on the bottom, and vividly red wing veins. Females are similarly patterned, but their abdomen is ochre yellow with two black lines along each side, and their wings feature yellow veins along the leading edge and base instead of red. I spotted this female on the island of Spetses, Greece, in an area buzzing with dragonflies. Capturing a beautiful photo takes quite a bit of patience, as they rarely stay immobile for long.
