Dark-winged fungus gnats (family Sciaridae) are tiny, mosquito-like flies that thrive in damp, humid environments. While completely harmless to humans, they act as critical decomposers within the ecosystem. The adults lay their eggs in moist soil, and once hatched, the slender, white larvae feed on decaying plant matter, fungi, and algae, successfully returning vital nutrients back to the earth. Despite their somewhat imposing family name, these minute insects play an incredibly beneficial role in nature. Because they are quite weak fliers, it was much easier for me to take photos! 🙂 I met this cooperative individual while exploring Nono, a small village in the highland of Ecuador.
