Net-winged beetles (family Lycidae) are cosmopolitan insects found in almost every region of the world. Over time, they have developed fascinating defensive behaviors; when handled or attacked, their wings and joints ooze a toxic, foul-tasting liquid that forces predators to spit them out immediately. Because they are so highly toxic—and use bright warning colors to advertise this danger to birds and lizards—dozens of entirely harmless insects (including moths, flies, and other beetles) have evolved to copy their exact appearance. This biological copycat behavior creates a massive protective network known as a “mimicry ring.” I discovered this striking net-winged beetle, likely belonging to the tribe Eurrhacini, while exploring the city park of Puyo, located in the Amazon region of Ecuador.
