Campsite chronicles: Capturing a hyperactive micro hunter on the Swedish riverside

Meet Bicellaria, a fascinating genus of miniature predatory dance flies belonging to the family Hybotidae. First described in 1823, these Holarctic insects measure a mere 2 to 4 millimeters but boast an outsized ecological impact. They earn their poetic common name from their elaborate, synchronized courtship rituals, where males gather in hovering aerial swarms. To win over a mate—and crucially distract her from cannibalistic impulses—males often present females with a carefully captured “nuptial gift” of prey. Despite their diminutive size, adults are highly effective aerial hunters, using specialized raptorial legs to snatch midges and other tiny flying pests right out of the air. Meanwhile, their subterranean larvae dwell in damp leaf litter, feeding on decaying organic matter. These flies are staples of temperate woodlands, typically found hovering near hedges and forest streams. I crossed paths with this super-cute micro-predator at a Swedish campsite; despite its non-stop movement, I managed to lock focus and secure a few beautiful shots.
