Meet Callomyia amoena, an incredibly rare and exquisite species of flat-footed fly (family Platypezidae) that is the ultimate prize for any patient macro photographer. Measuring a minuscule 5 millimeters in length, these tiny forest dwellers are highly specialized residents of dark, damp, old-growth woodlands. In a fascinating reversal of typical insect roles, it is the females of this species that dress to impress, sporting striking, high-contrast patterns of shimmering silver and velvety black to stand out in the deep forest shadows. The males, by contrast, are far more reserved, wearing dull shades of dark grey and brown. As their name suggests, these flies possess remarkably wide, expanded hind feet. These act like biological grip pads, allowing them to anchor themselves securely to slick leaves or tree bark as they hover in fleeting shafts of sunlight. Their larvae develop on the decaying wood floor, feeding strictly on the spores and tissue of specific wood-rotting fungi. Spotting one of these elusive gems is rare enough, but getting a sharp image of a moving, 5mm subject in low forest light is a challenge. After dozens of failed, blurry attempts, my patience finally paid off, and I captured some of the most rewarding, pin-sharp photos of my entire bicycle trip!
