Meet the weaver beetle (Lamia textor), a robust and ancient-looking longhorn beetle (family: Cerambycidae) that boasts a heavily armored, grainy black body measuring an impressive 15 to 32 millimeters in length. Found across Europe and North Asia, this nocturnal giant features a highly dramatic mating ritual: males use their exceptionally thick, Y-shaped antennae as physical levers to wrestle, flip, and displace rivals when competing for females. The females, meanwhile, call in their suitors from afar by releasing potent pheromones. Sadly, this magnificent species is facing a quiet crisis. Their larvae spend two to four years boring deep inside the submerged roots of willow and poplar trees. Because of heavy riverbed regulations and the tragic destruction of flooded willow wetlands across Europe, the weaver beetle has become incredibly rare, facing local extinction in many countries. I had an astonishing stroke of luck when I spotted this stunning individual right on the asphalt, nearly crushing it with my bicycle! After stopping and setting up my macro gear in record time, I found the beetle completely still, likely shaken by our close encounter. To protect it from passing cars, I gently moved it off the road. It thanked me by remaining perfectly immobile for over 10 minutes, allowing me to capture some nice sharp photos.
