Locked to the ground: The secret night walks of the brown leaf beetle

Meet the brown leaf beetle (Chrysolina staphylaea), a charming European native (family Chrysomelidae) that measures just under a centimeter in length. This little herbivore is instantly recognizable by its rich, reddish-brown body, which boasts a subtle, metallic bronze luster. Unlike many of their airborne relatives, these beetles are entirely flightless. Lacking the ability to fly, they rely on their legs to navigate the forest floor, active mostly under the cover of night as they search for their favorite leafy meals—particularly dock and sorrel. When the autumn chill sets in, the adults don’t perish; instead, they tuck themselves deep into damp leaf litter or beneath loose bark to safely hibernate through the freezing winter. I crossed paths with this gorgeous little vegetarian while it was resting quietly in the ground litter during the day. Because it was incredibly cooperative and barely budged, I was able to take my time and capture some beautiful shots from several angles.
