Dressed for the cold: The furry secret of Europe’s earliest dragonfly

Meet the hairy dragonfly (Brachytron pratense), a unique European species that boasts some of the most fascinating evolutionary adaptations in the insect world. While most dragonflies wait for the heat of midsummer, this trailblazer is dressed for chilly spring weather—its thorax is covered in a dense, downy coat of hair. This fuzzy insulation helps the dragonfly retain body heat, allowing it to take to the skies in the cool days of early spring. In fact, it is Europe’s earliest-flying hawker dragonfly, active from mid-April through July. Despite being an elite aerial predator, it is surprisingly sensitive to light; the moment a cloud blocks the sun, it instantly dives into the safety of reeds or shoreline vegetation to rest. The males are a stunning sight, sporting a pitch-black abdomen punctuated by glowing, pear-shaped blue spots and mesmerizing, vibrant blue eyes. On a recent outing, I hit the absolute photographer’s jackpot: I spotted a gorgeous male resting quietly on the forest litter, patiently posing as I captured some of the sharpest, most extraordinary macro photos of my collection!
