Red, bright, and beneficial: Why you want the common red soldier beetle in your garden

The common red soldier beetle (Rhagonycha fulva) is a striking, beneficial insect recognized by its orangey-red body and distinctive black-tipped wing cases. While adults primarily snack on pollen, nectar, and aphids, the larvae hunt down ground-dwelling pests like slugs and snails. To ward off birds and other predators, soldier beetles secrete foul-tasting defensive chemicals. Their bright, contrasting colors act as an aposematic warning signal, flashing a clear message to predators that they taste terrible. I observe these beetles every year during the summer in gardens and forests, and they truly make our world a bit more colorful and nicer! 🙂
