Patient hunters of the wetlands: The marsh snipefly up close

The marsh snipefly (Rhagio tringarius) is a striking predatory insect, measuring 8 to 14 millimeters in length and recognized by its bright yellow-orange abdomen and long, stilt-like legs. Unlike many of its close relatives within the genus Rhagio, it completely lacks dark markings on its clear wings. These slender-legged hunters are patient ambushers, perching motionless on leaves or tree trunks as they wait for unsuspecting prey to pass by. Both adults and ground-dwelling larvae are active predators: adults snatch small insects straight out of the air, while the larvae hunt earthworms and beetle larvae beneath the damp soil. Typically seen from May through September, they thrive in wet meadows, marshes, damp woodlands, and lush hedgerows. I encountered this stunning little predator in a lakeside nature reserve in Järfälla, Sweden. Crouching motionless on a leaf, it allowed me to approach calmly with the camera and take many photos from different angles and with adjusted settings.
