The migrant hoverfly (Eupeodes corollae) is a widespread, fascinating insect renowned for its long-distance seasonal migrations, voracious aphid-eating larvae, and an unusual habit of pre-grinding pollen before consumption. Measuring 6 to 11 millimeters in length, these hoverflies display clear sexual dimorphism: males feature squared, comma-like markings on their abdomen and eyes that meet at the top of the head, whereas females possess narrower comma spots and distinctly separated eyes. Exceptionally cold-tolerant, they remain active at temperatures as low as 10 degrees Celcius outperforming most other hoverfly species in early spring. Because their larvae are such efficient biological pest control agents, billions are deployed industrially to protect greenhouse crops. I met this cute female hoverfly in a local park in Barkarby, just a few blocks from my home.
