Overcoming fly stereotypes: Discovering the common tiger fly in Barkarby

Earning its fierce name from its relentless predatory nature, the common tiger fly (Coenosia tigrina) is a true miniature big cat of the insect realm. Measuring under 10 millimeters long, this strongly built fly wears a yellowish-grey coat uniquely patterned with dark dots at the base of every hair and bristle. Don’t let its modest size fool you—adult tiger flies are master acrobats that intercept other flying insects mid-air with surgical precision! Their hunting prowess isn’t limited to the sky, either: underground, their larvae stalk damp soil to hunt live earthworms and pest maggots, making them invaluable allies for gardeners and farmers. Widely spread across European meadows and forests, these tiny hunters thrive wherever small insects gather. I spotted this fly in a small park just a few blocks from my home in Barkarby, Sweden. I used to hesitate before photographing flies, thinking they all looked the same. But once I pushed past that initial stereotype, I discovered an astonishing world of intricate beauty and incredible diversity!
