Distinctive and charming, the rufous grasshopper (Gomphocerippus rufus) is easily identified by its unique club-shaped antennae tipped with bright white. Measuring 14 to 22 millimeters long, these warm-toned insects range from greyish-brown to rich reddish hues, with mature males showing off a striking orange-red tip at the end of their abdomen. While many grasshoppers fade away by late summer, this species thrives well into autumn, often remaining active until the first severe winter frosts. Males are famous for their remarkable courtship rituals—performing a soft, buzzing song paired with a synchronized visual dance that can last up to 15 minutes! Females lay protected egg packets tucked into topsoil and grass roots, where they wait out the freezing winter before hatching in late May. They love warm, sun-drenched grasslands and sunny forest edges. I came across this handsome male taking in the sunshine on a wide meadow near Akalla, Sweden!
