Masters of seasonal disguise: The world of the green shield bug

The green shield bug (Palomena prasina) is a common, plant-loving insect found all across Europe and Asia with some truly impressive survival tricks. Unlike butterflies, these bugs don’t form a cocoon; instead, babies hatch as tiny wingless mini-adults that simply shed their skins as they grow, sharing the exact same plant-based diet as their parents. Fully grown shield bugs are true masters of seasonal disguise. During spring and summer, they wear a vibrant bright-green coat to blend into fresh leaves. As autumn approaches, their bodies turn a dark bronze-brown to match falling leaves before they tuck away for winter hibernation. If a bird or predator isn’t fooled by their seasonal colors, the bug unleashes its final weapon: a powerful, foul-smelling chemical spray that drives away hungry threats instantly. I regularly meet these common bugs during summer walks in Poland and Sweden, and I’ve managed to capture some great photos showing their different growth stages!
