Instantly recognizable by its bright orange-red legs and distinctively squared shoulders, the forest bug (Pentatoma rufipes)—also known as the red-legged shieldbug—is a striking sight in northern woodlands. Growing to around 1.1 to 1.4 centimeters long, its dark, metallic bronze-brown body contrasts beautifully against its colorful legs and antennae. While most of its diet consists of drinking sweet sap from broadleaf trees like oak, birch, and hazel, this bug has a surprising carnivorous streak! Adults frequently hunt small caterpillars and aphids to supplement their meals, making them helpful woodland companions (though they occasionally nibble on orchard fruit like apples). Unlike many shieldbugs that hibernate as fully grown adults, this species has an unusual life cycle: it spends the freezing winter months as a tiny, tough young nymph, emerging as a vibrant adult by midsummer. I came across this patient little creature resting motionless in a forest near my home in Barkarby, Sweden. After heavy rain had soaked the area through the previous day and night, it seemed content to stay completely still, letting its armor dry out before moving on!
