Black and white sharpshooter leafhopper abundant in a protected rainforest on the ecuadorian coast

Sharpshooter leafhoppers (subfamily Cicadellinae) comprise a vast and diverse group of around 2,400 species spread across 300 distinct genera. Because of this immense diversity, identifying a specific species down to the exact taxon based solely on a photograph can be incredibly challenging. Like all leafhoppers, they feature specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts and closely spaced rows of fine spines along their hind legs. The wingless nymphs develop by inserting their needle-like mouthparts into the xylem of the small plant stems where their eggs were originally deposited. Once they transition into winged adults, they become highly mobile, generalist feeders that move from plant to plant. I crossed paths with this striking black-and-white individual in the protected forest of “La Perla” in La Concordia, Ecuador. There were hundreds of them fluttering across a wide forest clearing—a spectacular gathering that was impossible to miss thanks to their vivid, high-contrast coloration!
