Tettisama bisellata is a striking Neotropical sharpshooter leafhopper (Cicadellidae) first described in 1862 by French entomologist Victor Antoine Signoret. Like its relatives, it features rows of fine spines along its hind legs and specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts built to feed on plant xylem fluid. While wingless nymphs develop on the specific stems where their eggs were laid, adults transform into highly mobile, generalist feeders. I crossed paths with this stunning individual in the protected forest of “La Perla” near La Concordia, Ecuador. Hundreds of them were fluttering across a wide forest clearing—a spectacular, high-contrast gathering that was completely impossible to miss!
