A tiny fabulous leafhopper showing off in a rainforest on the ecuadorian coast

This gorgeous little sharpshooter leafhopper (Ladoffa dependens) is native to Central and South America. While it looks quite distinct from its cousins, it shares the same diet, feeding on nutrient-rich plant sap. Its brilliant crimson body is a classic evolutionary strategy to deter predators—a visual shout of “I’m toxic, don’t eat me!” This striking warning coloration is powered by specialized chemical pigments, such as ommochromes and carotenoids, stored right within the insect’s exoskeleton. When I first spotted this vibrant creature while exploring the “La Perla” protected rainforest in Ecuador, its fluttery, colorful presence completely fooled me; I originally mistook it for a tiny butterfly or moth. It was only later, when analyzing the shots for identification, that I realized I had crossed paths with a remarkably unique leafhopper.
