Macabre hide and seek: The nightmare drills of Lissonota wasps

Meet the wasps of the genus Lissonota—a massive, incredibly diverse group of parasitoid assassins with over 400 species worldwide, including nearly 200 in Europe alone. These wasps are highly specialized masters of a lethal game of hide and seek, specifically targeting caterpillars that think they are safely hidden away inside rolled leaves, seed pods, or bored deep within plant stems. But nothing is out of reach for a female Lissonota. Equipped with an incredibly long, needle-like ovipositor—which in some species actually exceeds the length of her entire body—she can drill straight through solid plant tissue or tough tree bark to blind-inject a single egg directly into a living host. Once hatched, the wasp larva slowly consumes the caterpillar from the inside out, carefully keeping its victim alive just long enough to reach maturity. While the females hunt down their hidden hosts, the adults of both sexes can often be found peacefully sipping nectar on forest wildflowers. I crossed paths with this formidable female and her massive ovipositor during a bicycle touring trip through a quiet Swedish forest.
