The beetle in disguise: Discovering a rare Amazonian true bug

Canopus impressus is a fascinating species of small, neotropical true bug (order Hemiptera) belonging to the incredibly obscure family Canopidae. These highly elusive insects measure a mere 5 to 7 millimeters in length and are native to the dense rainforests of Central and South America. What makes this find so special is how rare they are in the scientific world—the entire Canopidae family contains only six known species. They remain largely unstudied, though experts believe they feed entirely on fungi. I encountered this specific individual during my very first photography excursion to the Amazon rainforest in Yasuní National Park, Ecuador. Looking through the lens, I was convinced I was shooting a tiny, glossy beetle. It wasn’t until I sat down later to identify the species that I discovered its true identity: it was a true bug in disguise! 😉
