Flea beetles are small, agile leaf beetles (family: Chrysomelidae) famous for their enlarged hind legs, which allow them to leap away like fleas at the slightest disturbance. Measuring less than 1 cm in length, Asphaera meticulosa stands out with a brilliant, contrasting color pattern, featuring bold transverse bands of red, white and pink across its wing covers (elytra). These diurnal herbivores feed primarily on foliage and flowers. While they play a balanced role in wild ecosystems, large aggregations can occasionally pose a challenge in agricultural settings. I came across several brightly colored flea beetles while traveling in Ecuador. This particular individual was likely the very first one I encountered during my maiden trip to the Amazon rainforest, captured while testing out my new macrophotography setup!
