Amastris is a diverse New World genus of treehoppers (Membracidae). Like many of their relatives, these plant-feeding insects feature a distinctive, helmet-like structure over the thorax called a pronotum. Their subtle greenish-yellow or brownish tones allow them to blend seamlessly into leaves and stems. To protect their young, females often guard their egg masses and clusters of nymphs against predators. As they feed on nutrient-rich phloem sap, Amastris treehoppers excrete a sugary waste called honeydew. This sweet treat attracts nearby ants, who “farm” the treehoppers and aggressively defend both nymphs and adults from predators like spiders and mantises in exchange for food. I captured this scene during one of my very first photography outings using my original gear. Although the image isn’t quite as sharp as I’d like today, I feel fortunate to have documented this interaction between treehopper and ant against such a soft, vibrant green background.
