Prowling across the dark jungle floor on agile legs, wandering spiders in the genus Centroctenus are true nocturnal hunters of the Neotropical rainforest. Belonging to the family Ctenidae, these stealthy arachnids forgo building webs entirely, spending their nights actively roaming the leaf litter to ambush unsuspecting insects! Experts can easily identify Centroctenus males by their uniquely elongated leg segments, which give them a slender, athletic build. While they belong to the same spider family as the infamous Brazilian wandering spider (Phoneutria), these forest dwellers are completely harmless to humans and much more interested in hunting small bugs than causing trouble. Found across dense rainforests in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Venezuela, they are true icons of South American biodiversity.
