The miniature master of catapult: The flea beetle of La Perla

During my first expedition into the breathtaking, protected rainforest of “La Perla” on the Ecuadorian coast in December 2023, I crossed paths with a truly miniature marvel: a tiny, spherical flea beetle measuring a mere 2 millimeters in length, boasting a pair of absolutely colossal hind thighs. Unfortunately, due to its miniature scale and my own battlefield struggles with dialing in the perfect camera settings for the dense canopy light, the resulting macro frames came out overexposed. I decided to share them anyway, because the spectacular build of this amazing jumper deserves to be seen. These dome-shaped flea beetles likely from the genus Sphaeroderma are celebrated for their highly enlarged, muscular hind femora. These swollen legs house a specialized internal structure known as a metafemoral spring, packed with robust muscles and a highly resilient, elastic protein called resilin. By locking the joint and storing kinetic energy within this biological catapult, the tiny beetles can instantly trigger a rapid release, exploding into the air to jump incredible distances and vanish from danger in the blink of an eye.
