Say hello to the genus Thaumasia, a group of remarkable semi-aquatic nursery web spiders (family Pisauridae) ruling the Neotropical wetlands of Central and South America. Forget sitting around waiting for food—these spiders are active, high-speed predators. Thanks to their specialized build, they can effortlessly skate across the water’s surface to ambush prey, or patiently lurk on lakeside vegetation to snatch passing insects and even small vertebrates. True to their family name, motherhood is a big deal here: when it’s time to hatch, the female constructs a delicate silk nursery web in the nearby foliage, tucks her egg sac safely inside, and stands guard like a fierce bouncer until her spiderlings are ready to venture out. I crossed paths with this striking individual deep in the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador, capturing it just as it was finishing off a small insect.
