Matchstick grasshoppers (family Eumastacidae) are quirky insects primarily found in tropical and subtropical forests. They earn their “matchstick” moniker from their thin legs and elongated, wingless bodies. Grasshoppers belonging to the genus Eumastax are incredibly colorful. Adults frequently boast iridescent and metallic shades of blue, green, red, and yellow, often topped off with striking black-and-white eyes. They thrive in dense rainforests and can be found everywhere from the shady forest floor to the high jungle canopy. I encountered this stunning matchstick grasshopper during my first photography excursion to the Amazon forest. I struggled to take sharp photos because after the first attempts, when trying to adjust the camera settings, he just jumped away.
